Card Meanings

General Meaning

Strength is the card of controlled power and successful overcoming.

It appears when there is real resistance in the situation: an obstacle, a demanding task, a strong opponent, difficult circumstances, intense emotions, or something that simply will not resolve without active involvement.

The card shows that the necessary resource exists.

This resource may be physical strength, emotional endurance, confidence, patience, influence, determination, sexual energy, willpower, or the ability to remain composed under pressure.

However, Strength is not about using maximum force.

Its deeper principle is using the right amount of force in the right way.

A person succeeds because they understand how to distribute their energy, when to insist, when to hold back, when to remain patient, and where continued effort is actually necessary.

For this reason, Strength is particularly powerful in questions such as:

  • Can I overcome this?
  • Will I be able to handle the pressure?
  • Can I deal with this person?
  • Do I have enough strength to continue?
  • Can this obstacle be defeated?

In such questions, Strength is a strongly favorable card.

The victory may require considerable effort, but the card itself does not predict failure. It shows that resistance can be overcome if the available resource is managed wisely.

The Shadow Side of Strength

The shadow of Strength begins when power stops being intelligently directed.

Confidence may become dominance. Persistence may become stubbornness. Influence may turn into control. The desire to overcome an obstacle may turn into the belief that every situation must be conquered by applying more pressure.

A person may also waste enormous amounts of energy simply because they are accustomed to relying on their own endurance.

They continue carrying, controlling, fighting, solving, and managing everything themselves until strength begins to turn into exhaustion.

Another shadow manifestation is the temptation to dominate someone weaker.

Strength gives a person real influence, and this influence becomes destructive when it is used to suppress rather than manage a situation responsibly.

The problem is therefore not strength itself.

The problem is poorly directed strength.

Strength Reversed

Strength reversed does not mean that all power disappears or that defeat becomes inevitable.

Instead, the same principle becomes impaired.

The person may have less energy available, distribute it badly, underestimate the difficulty of the obstacle, lose confidence, become exhausted, or struggle to maintain control over their own reactions.

In another manifestation, there is still plenty of power, but it is being used badly.

Determination becomes aggression. Confidence becomes arrogance. Passion becomes possessiveness. Influence becomes domination. Persistence becomes excessive pressure.

The reversed card therefore makes overcoming the situation more difficult, but it does not automatically make it impossible.

More effort may be required. Progress may be slower. The person may have to correct the way they are using their resources before the obstacle can finally be overcome.

Core Message

Strength says that you have something powerful at your disposal, but success depends on how wisely you use it.

Do not waste your energy and do not confuse strength with aggression.

Understand where resistance actually exists, direct your resources toward it, maintain control, and continue until the obstacle gives way.

Strength as a Person

Strength describes a powerful, resilient, and self-confident person.

They usually possess a strong character and are difficult to intimidate or pressure into submission. They tend to know what they are capable of and can remain functional in situations that would overwhelm someone with fewer internal resources.

This person may be energetic, passionate, persistent, competitive, charismatic, physically expressive, and highly motivated.

They are often capable of influencing other people without needing formal authority.

Unlike the Emperor, whose power is connected with position, structure, rules, and responsibility, Strength relies much more heavily on personal power.

This is someone who can withstand pressure, manage strong emotions, pursue a goal for a long time, and continue when other people begin to lose their nerve.

At their best, they know how to use power without constantly demonstrating it.

They can be firm without losing control and persistent without becoming chaotic.

Strength as Actions

As actions, Strength is persistent and deliberate.

The person does not simply wait for circumstances to change.

They engage with the situation, maintain pressure where necessary, manage resistance, and continue working toward the desired result.

Their actions may include:

  • continuing despite difficulties;
  • defending their position;
  • confronting an obstacle;
  • pursuing a person or goal persistently;
  • managing a difficult or emotional situation;
  • keeping themselves under control during conflict;
  • influencing someone through confidence and persistence;
  • maintaining an effort until resistance begins to weaken.

Strength is therefore not about one explosive action.

It is often about sustaining the correct amount of effort for long enough to overcome what stands in the way.

Strength in Love and Relationships

Strength is generally a good card for love and relationships.

It shows that the relationship has life force.

There is enough energy within the connection for it to remain active, withstand tension, survive difficulties, and continue developing rather than simply fading away.

This makes Strength an important card of relationship viability.

A difficult period does not automatically destroy the connection. The relationship may have enough internal resource to work through problems, provided that the people involved manage that energy constructively.

Strength also has a powerful physical and instinctive dimension.

It can indicate intense attraction, sexual chemistry, desire, passion, fascination, and a strong pull between two people.

The connection is rarely emotionally neutral.

One or both people may feel deeply affected by the other and motivated to maintain, protect, pursue, or strengthen the relationship.

At the same time, Strength does not automatically promise harmony, marriage, or effortless emotional compatibility.

Its positive quality lies in energy, resilience, attraction, and the ability of the relationship to withstand pressure.

Strength as Thoughts

As thoughts, Strength shows strong mental involvement with the person or relationship.

The person may believe that the situation is worth pursuing and that difficulties can be overcome through patience, effort, and persistence.

They are often thinking about how to manage the relationship rather than simply abandoning it.

There may be thoughts such as:

I can handle this.

This can still work.

I need to stay in control.

I have to find the right way to deal with this person.

When attraction is strong, the other person can occupy a significant amount of mental space simply because the pull toward them is difficult to ignore.

Strength as Feelings

As feelings, Strength is a powerful card of attraction.

It indicates passion, sexual desire, fascination, strong attachment, physical chemistry, and an instinctive pull toward another person.

The feelings have energy behind them.

The person does not feel indifferent or emotionally disconnected.

Strength can also show warm, protective feelings and a desire to preserve a bond because the relationship feels alive and significant.

In an established relationship, it may reflect emotional resilience: the person still has enough feeling and motivation to invest energy into keeping the relationship alive.

Strength is therefore more than sexual attraction alone.

However, its emotional language remains highly energetic and instinctive. Other cards are still useful when determining the exact depth, tenderness, vulnerability, or long-term emotional compatibility involved.

Strength as Intentions

As intentions, Strength wants to continue, preserve, overcome, and achieve.

The person is usually not planning to give up easily.

If there are problems in the relationship, they may intend to work through them, regain control of the situation, maintain the bond, or continue pursuing the person despite resistance.

The intention may be to:

  • keep the relationship alive;
  • overcome an existing conflict;
  • pursue the person;
  • strengthen the bond;
  • regain influence;
  • maintain closeness;
  • protect what already exists;
  • continue trying until the situation changes.

These are strong intentions because there is real energy behind them.

Strength as an Outcome

As an outcome, Strength is a highly favorable card when the situation involves a challenge, obstacle, competition, resistance, or something that must be overcome.

It indicates that the necessary resource exists and that the obstacle can be defeated.

The result is not effortless.

Strength does not describe a situation where everything simply falls into place without resistance. There is something that must be managed, endured, controlled, or overcome first.

But the presence of difficulty does not turn the card negative.

Strength does not predict failure.

Instead, it shows a result achieved because the person remains strong enough, patient enough, and disciplined enough to continue until resistance is overcome.

This is especially important when asking:

Will I manage to do this?

Can I overcome the obstacle?

Will I cope with the situation?

In these questions, upright Strength is a strong indication that the answer is yes.

Strength in Career and Work

Strength is an excellent card for professional situations that demand stamina, discipline, persistence, leadership, competition, and the ability to deal with pressure.

It often appears when career progress depends on the person's own capacity to keep going.

There may be a difficult project, a demanding client, competition for a position, a challenging professional environment, or a goal that cannot be reached without sustained personal effort.

Strength indicates that the person is capable of handling this pressure.

It can show:

  • strong professional motivation;
  • leadership through personal authority;
  • resilience under pressure;
  • successful competition;
  • persistence after setbacks;
  • the ability to manage difficult people;
  • sustained effort toward a goal;
  • the capacity to turn potential into a real result.

The strongest career expression of Strength is not working endlessly.

It is knowing where to put your energy so that the work actually produces a result.

Strength in Money and Finances

In finances, Strength shows the ability to actively manage a material situation through discipline, persistence, and personal effort.

It is particularly useful when money depends on the person's own ability to work, negotiate, compete, solve problems, maintain discipline, or continue generating income despite pressure.

The card can indicate:

  • protecting existing resources;
  • increasing income through sustained effort;
  • negotiating better financial conditions;
  • controlling spending;
  • managing financial pressure;
  • recovering from a difficult financial period;
  • having enough personal resource to improve the situation.

Strength is not inherently a card of wealth or passive financial luck.

It does not mean that money simply appears.

Its financial advantage lies in the person's capacity to influence the situation and overcome material difficulties through intelligent use of their own resources.

Strength in Health

Within the Tarovera Tarot health system, upright Strength is associated with vitality, energy, physical resilience, and generally strong health.

It can indicate a person with a substantial reserve of physical strength and an organism capable of responding actively to stress.

If the person is already unwell, Strength may also be associated within this Tarot system with increased body heat or a high temperature rather than simply functioning as a general indication of good health.

Tarot should not be used as a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.

Strength Timing — When Will It Happen?

When the question is when, Strength corresponds to late July or early August.

When the question is how long, the usual period is approximately two weeks to two months.

However, the timing mechanism of Strength is more important than the calendar range alone.

This card rarely describes a situation that resolves entirely by itself.

Something must be actively overcome.

The person may need to make a sustained effort, manage resistance, maintain pressure, use their influence, or deliberately create the conditions necessary for progress.

Strength therefore makes timing partly dependent on participation.

If the necessary effort is applied, the situation can move within the indicated period.

If everyone remains passive and waits for circumstances to resolve themselves, the process may remain stuck because the resource required to overcome the obstacle has never been used.

Key Timing Correspondence

When: Late July to early August

How long: Approximately two weeks to two months

Timing mechanism: The situation requires active effort and intelligent use of personal resources. Progress occurs through overcoming resistance rather than waiting for circumstances to change on their own.

Strength as an Event

As an event, Strength usually describes a situation that requires someone to use real personal resources.

A challenge appears, resistance must be handled, or circumstances demand endurance, confidence, self-control, and persistence.

Possible manifestations include:

  • successfully dealing with a difficult situation;
  • overcoming an obstacle;
  • confronting a strong opponent;
  • competing for something important;
  • handling intense pressure;
  • having to defend a position;
  • taking control of a demanding situation;
  • experiencing powerful attraction or sexual chemistry;
  • continuing despite resistance until progress is achieved.

The defining feature is not simply that something difficult happens.

It is that the person is required to become strong enough to deal with it.

Strength as Card of the Day

Strength as Card of the Day suggests that something today may require more than passive observation.

You may need to remain patient, deal with resistance, control an emotional reaction, manage a difficult person, continue working despite frustration, or put sustained effort into something that matters.

The card can also bring increased energy, confidence, physical activity, passion, competition, or strong attraction.

The best use of the day is not to push everything equally hard.

Identify what genuinely requires your strength and direct your resources there.

Strength as Advice

Strength advises you to use your power deliberately.

Do not wait indefinitely for a resistant situation to resolve itself.

If something genuinely matters, engage with it.

Be persistent. Maintain your position. Keep control of your reactions. Apply effort where resistance actually exists and continue long enough for that resistance to weaken.

At the same time, do not confuse effective force with maximum force.

The card advises wise distribution of resources.

Sometimes the strongest action is persistence.

Sometimes it is restraint.

Sometimes it is maintaining pressure without escalating conflict.

Strength asks you to understand which form of power the situation actually requires.

Strength Reversed as Advice

Do not abandon the goal simply because overcoming it has become more difficult.

Instead, examine how your strength is being used.

You may be wasting energy, pushing in the wrong direction, underestimating the obstacle, or trying to compensate for exhaustion by applying even more pressure.

Reorganize your resources.

Reduce unnecessary struggle, regain control of your reactions, and direct your remaining energy more intelligently.

The obstacle may still be overcome, but not by continuing to waste strength in an ineffective way.

Strength as a Warning

Strength warns that having power does not mean that every situation should be dominated.

Do not waste valuable energy proving that you are stronger than someone else.

Avoid unnecessary power struggles, excessive control, stubborn insistence, aggression, possessiveness, and the temptation to push simply because you are capable of pushing.

The card can also warn against overestimating your endurance.

A strong person may continue functioning long after they should have reconsidered how much energy the situation is consuming.

The danger is not always weakness.

Sometimes it is using too much strength where a more intelligent distribution of resources would achieve more.

Strength — Yes or No

Upright: Yes

Strength gives a yes.

The obstacle is real, and the result may require substantial effort, but the card shows that the necessary resource exists.

You can overcome the resistance and achieve the result if you remain persistent, manage your energy wisely, and do not give up simply because the process is difficult.

This is not an easy yes.

It is a yes through overcoming.

Reversed: Yes, but with greater difficulty

Strength reversed also gives a yes.

However, the obstacle is more difficult to overcome.

The available resource may be lower, the person may be using it inefficiently, or the amount of resistance may be greater than expected.

The desired result remains achievable, but it requires more effort, better self-control, greater endurance, or a more intelligent distribution of resources.

The reversed card worsens the conditions of achieving the result.

It does not automatically change the answer from yes to no.

Strength Symbolism

The traditional Rider–Waite–Smith image of Strength shows a woman interacting calmly with a lion.

The image is important because it demonstrates that Strength is not simply a card of physical force.

It is a card about the relationship between power and control.

The Lion

The lion represents raw force.

It can symbolize instinct, courage, aggression, desire, sexuality, appetite, passion, vitality, and the powerful impulses that exist before conscious control is applied.

The lion is not weak.

This is important.

Strength does not gain its meaning because the obstacle is insignificant.

The card is powerful precisely because what must be managed is itself powerful.

The Woman and the Lion

The woman does not destroy the lion.

She is able to interact with it, handle it, and bring its enormous force under control.

This represents one of the central principles of Strength:

power becomes useful when it can be directed.

The image also reflects the card's connection with overcoming resistance.

The goal is not to eliminate every opposing force.

It is to become capable of managing it.

The Woman's Calm Expression

The woman's composure shows that genuine strength does not require constant aggression.

She does not appear frightened by the lion, but she also does not lose herself in its energy.

This reflects confidence, emotional regulation, patience, and the ability to remain conscious while dealing with something intense.

The card therefore distinguishes between controlled strength and uncontrolled force.

The Infinity Symbol

The infinity symbol above the woman's head suggests continuing access to inner resources.

It points to sustained power rather than one short burst of effort.

This is especially important to the practical meaning of Strength.

The card often requires someone to maintain the correct level of effort for long enough to overcome resistance.

A momentary display of courage is not always sufficient.

The resource must be managed over time.

The Flowers and White Clothing

The softer visual elements surrounding the woman balance the animal force of the lion.

They reinforce the idea that strength does not need to become brutality in order to remain effective.

Consciousness, restraint, patience, and refinement can coexist with enormous personal power.

The Core Symbolism of Strength

The central image of Strength is the meeting of raw power and intelligent control.

The lion provides the energy.

The woman determines how that energy is used.

Without the lion, there is no force with which to overcome resistance.

Without the woman, there is force without direction.

Together they express the complete principle of the card:

having enough power to face resistance, enough wisdom to distribute that power correctly, and enough endurance to continue until the obstacle is overcome.
